Performance benefits year-long program marking the 50th anniversary of this landmark decision
CHICAGO-The Illinois Humanities Council (IHC) will present a reenactment of the Brown v. Board of Education oral arguments on Monday, April 19, 2004 from 6:00 – 7:15 p.m. at The Goodman Theatre in Chicago, 170 North Dearborn Street. A reception will follow the program. Working from an edited transcript, a number of Chicago’s own legal luminaries will portray the attorneys and justices involved in this landmark case. James D. Montgomery (Cochran, Cherry, Givens, Smith & Montgomery) will portray Thurgood Marshall, while Christopher G. Markey (Michael W. Coffield & Associates) will portray John Davis.
The Supreme Court Justices will be portrayed by The Honorable William J. Bauer (U. S. Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit), The Honorable Ann Claire Williams (U.S. Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit), The Honorable Ruben Castillo (U. S. District Court Judge, Northern District of Illinois), The Honorable Joan B. Gottschall (U.S. District Court Judge, Northern District of Illinois), and The Honorable Nan R. Nola n (U.S. Magistrate Judge, Northern District of Illinois).
Jerold S. Solovy (Chairman, Jenner & Block) will be master of ceremonies for the program, and University of Chicago Professor of Classics and Political Science and MacArthur Fellow Danielle Allen will lead a post-performance discussion with Thomas P. Sullivan (Partner, Jenner & Block).
The IHC has worked with the American Bar Association Division for Public Education, the Mexican American Legal Defense and Educational Fund (MALDEF), and the Constitutional Rights Foundation Chicago (CRFC) on this special event.
All proceeds from this benefit will go to underwrite “ Brown v. Board 50 Years Later: Conversations on Integration, Race, and the Courts” a year-long series of public programs sponsored by the Illinois Humanities Council going on around the state from April 2004 – May 2005.
